Nat Turner
  • IN 1831 Nat Turner led a slave revolt consisting
    of 55 slaves in Virginia
  • Turners plan was to arm slaves as they were freed
    from their plantations
  • In two days the revolt was smashed by a white
    malitia
  • What do you think the reaction of the whites
    would have been towards this revolt?

  • Nat Turner was hanged, beheaded, and quartered.
  • Slavery advocates argued that if freed, slaves
    would act with hostility to whites.
  • All slaves expected of taking part were executed
    (56). Angry mobs killed many other slaves.

    the best way to fight the issue
  • Abolitionist continually argued about the
    immorality of slavery.

Grimke sisters
  • Sarah Grimke renounced the Episcopalian faith to
    embrace the Quaker religion in 1821 in an attempt
    to find a religion more welcoming of her
    abolitionist views. (Her sister joined her)
  • Sparked debates about how involved women should
    be in the movement.
  • Continually made speeches about abolition and
    womens rights. Retired in 1838 into the
    background of the movement.

  • Liberty party minor political party that
    attempted to run candidates for president in 1840
    and 1844
  • Free soil party the Liberty party joined anti
    slavery Whigs to form the Free Soil Party

  • Free Soil Party 1848 - 1854
  • Avoided arguing the morals of slavery as Garrison
    did.
  • Argued that slavery would pose a threat to
    business in the new western territories.
