Symbol

• A symbol is a concrete object, person, place or
  action that operates on at least 2 levels it
  functions as itself and it stands for a wider
  meaning.

Motif

• Motifs are pieces of a story (or throughout
  literature in general) that keep repeating during
  the course of the story. Motifs can be images or
  symbols or themes.
• A motif in Huck Finn is the Mississippi river.
