Power in Canada
  • In the period directly after the first world war
    Canada was finding itself as a nation as a young
    global power. The role that Canada played during
    the conflict of WWI earned Canada some
    recognition. It allowed them to be seen as more
    than a piece of the British Empire.

Baby steps
  • However as we will find out the nation of Canada
    had a lot more maturing to do in order to become
    a full player on the international stage.

First Nations
  • As a group, First Nations people had been
    uprooted and relocated in the 1800s.
  • The government wanted to ASSIMILATE all First
    Nations people into mainstream culture.
  • This meant giving up their beliefs, language and
    values.
  • The government thought that would help the First
    Nations people.

Maintaining Identity
  • Schools and education were one way of
    assimilating.
  • Children were removed from their parents and were
    forbidden to speak in their language or celebrate
    their culture.
  • But many First Nations people were not accepted
    into other societies.

Government laws that hurt
  • In 1927, the government amended an Act that would
    make it illegal for First Nations people to hire
    lawyers or organize political parties.
  • Many First Nations maintained a strong identity
    through this time!

1920s- Electricity is fun!
  • Telephones, Radio, and Motion pictures were NEW
    sources of fun in the 1920s.
  • In 1925, Ted Rogers created the first electric
    radio. This promoted news, events and the
    beginning of jazz music.

Americas sweetheart and the talkies
  • Mary Pickford was a popular silent movie star in
    the 20s.
  • She was nicknamed America's sweetheart.
  • She starred in talking movies which became called
    the talkies.
  • She formed United films.

Golden age of sports
  • With shorter working hours and money to spend,
    Canadians wanted to watch and play sports.
  • Hockey games were broadcasted on the radio. He
    shoots! He scores! was Foster Hewitts shout.
  • In 1928 women were able to compete in the
    Olympics for the first time. They won gold at
    the 400m!
  • Hockey became an Olympic sport that was won by
    Canada.

Ive got a new attitude!
  • Nightclubs became popular in the 1920s. People
    were relaxing and wanted to dance and listen to
    live music.
  • The Charleston was a dance to learn.
  • Womens fashions changed with their attitudes.
    Boyish haircuts and high hemlines were in.
  • Bow ties and baggy pants were the fashion for
    men.

Smugglers
  • From 1920-1933 alcohol was illegal in the USA.
    This was called the prohibition.
  • Some Canadians deemed rum runners made money
    smuggling liquor to the states.
  • Punishment for this was jail and underground
    crime grew as a result.
