After Lincolns assassination, Vice-President
Andrew Johnson became President. Johnsons plan
included 4 requirements 1. states had to end
slavery 2. states had to declare that their
secession had been illegal 3. cancel all war
debts 4. white males would have to pledge their
loyalty to the U.S. to re-enter the Union.

Organization created to provide food, shelter,
education, and medicine for former slaves. Major
contribution was the creation of schools for
African Americans

  • Laws limiting the rights of African Americans
    passed during Reconstruction by the South.
  • Assigned African Americans to second-class

  • Marriages between Whites and African Americans
    was outlawed.
  • African American had to use separate public
    transportation.

  • Required all states to write a new constitution
    prior to being readmitted into the Union.
  • This new constitution must reject secession.
  • This new constitution must end slavery

  • People were affected socially in the Civil War
    and during Reconstruction.
  • Family members died while fighting in war or
    while people were away fighting.
  • Black Codes were introduced into the South and
    groups like the KKK formed.

  • Due to the end of slavery, the south must now
    rely on sharecroppers to work their fields
    instead of plantation agriculture.

  • Constitution of 1869
  • Declared U.S. Constitution the law.
  • Guaranteed the right of all men to vote
    regardless of race, color, or former condition.
  • Texas was admitted back into the Union on March
    8, 1870, after TX ratified the 14th and 15th
    amendments.

    take control of Congress.
  • They wanted to punish Southerners and reorganize
    the South.
  • New plan focused on limiting the role of former
    Confederate leaders and protecting the civil
    rights of African Americans.

  • Secret group who wanted to restore Democratic
    control in the South and to keep former slaves
    powerless.
  • They attacked African Americans and white
    Republicans.
  • They rode on horseback and were dressed in white
    robes and hoods.
  • They beat people and burned their homes.
