Mary Rowlandson
  • Puritan housewife and mother
  • February 1675, she along with her children were
    kidnapped by a group of Native Americans
  • One of her children was seriously injured and
    later perished

  • She was the wife of Reverend Joseph Rowlandson
  • Carried a bible with her throughout her ordeal
  • One of the first writings published by a woman
  • Created the new genre of the captivity narrative

King Philips War
  • In 1662, Plymouth attacked Wampanoag leader
    Wamsutta for land. He died and this angered the
    Wampanoag.
  • Wamsutta's brother Metacom (also called Philip)
    succeeded him.
  • In 1675, hostilities broke out in the town of
    Swansea, and the war spread as far north as New
    Hampshire, and as far southwest as Connecticut.

  • The outcome of King Philips War was devastating
    to the traditional way of life for Native People
    in New England. Hundreds of Natives who fought
    with Philip were sold into slavery abroad.
