Topic Sentences
  • You should have a topic sentence for paragraphs 2
    6.

    in that paragraph.
  • In stanza one the poet helps us to understand
Stevens fathers confusion when he is told that
Stevens hair has been burnt black by the
    explosion.

6
Quotes
  • After every topic sentence you should quote the
words/phrases/lines to which you are referring.
  • Ah theres been a mistake. The hair you see.
    Its black, now Stevens fair

7
Explain
  • You must identify the technique used.
  • You must say why it is effective.
  • The poet uses contrast between light and dark to
show us how badly burned Stevens body has been.
This is effective as it shows us the extent of
damage the explosion has done to his body meaning
that Stevens blond hair has been burnt black by
    the fire.

8
Personal Response
  • You must explain how this made you feel when you
    read it and why.
  • I feel sympathy for Stevens father here because
he is clearly very upset and doesnt want to
    believe his son is dead.

9

  • You have at least one quote for each main body

Introduction
  • You should refer to the question.
  • You should state the name of the poem and its
    poet.
  • You should have sentence which sums up what the
    poem is about.
  • Finally, you should have a sentence about what
you are going to discuss in your essay.

11
Example
  • A poem which is presents another persons point
of view isThe Identification by Roger McGough.
The poem is about a father attempting to identify
the remains of his dead son. I will explain how
the poet helps me to understand the other point
of view by identifying and explaining the
    techniques that are used.

12
Summary
  • Your first paragraph should be a short summary in
which you quickly write about what happens in the
    story.
  • You must mention the fact it is a Dramatic
    monologue.
  • You must highlight the key themes of the text.

13
Example
  • The Identification by Roger McGough is a
dramatic monologue seen through the eyes of a
dead boys Father. Throughout the course of the
text, the father attempts to convince himself
that the boy who is in front of him is not his
son which becomes a major theme of denial within
the poem. As the poem progresses, the father has
to identify various possessions while going
through various stages of grief when he is given
things such as Stevens scout belt and pack of
cigarettes. The father tries to deny the
cigarettes had anything to do with his son and
chooses to justify the possession of them as
Steven holding onto them for someone else so
ending the poem with the fathers denial.

14
Conclusion
  • Your conclusion must make it clear that you are
finishing your essay using in conclusion, or
    to conclude.
  • You must include the title of the text and the
    authors name.
  • You have answered the question.
  • You have summed up what you have written about.
  • You have given your opinion of the text.

15
Example
  • In conclusion, I can now understand Stevens
Fathers point of view in The Identification by
Roger McGough. He is clearly very upset and
chooses to remain in denial as he has had to
identify the remains of his dead son meaning that
his grief may be too much for him to deal with. I
have explained what the poem was about and
discussed how the poet has used techniques such
as dramatic monologue and contrast to help me
understand anothers point of view. Overall, I
did not enjoy the poem as the idea of having to
identify a dead relative makes me feel
    uncomfortable.
