  • Examine soil profiles.
  • Examine how desertification, salinization, and
    irrigation have affected food supply.
  • Examine the evolution and success of the Green

  • This is a culmination of everything weve been
    doing over the last week.

The Green Revolution
  • The Green Revolution had an enormous impact on
    the consumption of food resources.
  • To an extent, our map illustrates that impact.
  • Most of South America and Asia became
    self-sufficient, yet Africa didnt, why?

The Good
  • Farmers could produce more grain.
  • Many nations became self-sufficient in the
    production of grain and could therefore look
    towards producing other, more expensive goods.
  • Over the short term famine and malnutrition
    decreased.

The Bad
  • The increased production of grain had a profound
    impact on the environment.
  • Over time fertilizer made the soil less fertile.
  • Irrigation techniques caused salinization (salt
    deposits) in soils.
  • Pesticides contaminated waters and foods.
  • Many farmers couldnt afford all the inputs.
  • Loss of biodiversity.
  • Increased economic inequality.
  • Increased the price of grain products making it
    even harder for the have-nots to produce and
    survive.

  • There was a massive increase in world population
    because the carrying capacity of the planet
    increased.
  • The increased population has also had an effect
    on the environment.

  • So what ended up happening to Africa?
  • Health
  • Plays a big role in production of food resources
  • What health issues affect Africa? Could this have
    an impact on the production of food resources?
  • Education
  • Its hard to get an education when there is no
    one to teach you or when the education system
    doesnt have any resources to draw on
  • Economic Forces
  • The Green Revolution helped spark a population
    boom which increased the demand for food.
  • What happens to the price of goods when there is
    a greater demand for those goods?
  • Imagine an auction.

What happens as demand increases?

  • As demand increases so does the price. Imagine
    what happened to the price of grain when the
    population of our planet essentially doubled
    between 1960 and 2008.

  • The map we created is a basic overview of global
    food production.
  • Furthermore, the map gives insight into factors
    affecting food production war, politics, health
    and economics.
  • To an extent it shows how the green revolution
    has impacted global food production. Some nations
    became productive, others got left behind.
