Title: Style, Tone, Mood

1
Style, Tone, Mood
2
Style
  • Style is the authors way of expressing his/her
ideas. This is often done through word choice,
voice, point of view, sentence structure,
organization of text, and the use of conventions.

3
When analysing an authors style we need to
consider
  • Point of View
  • Formal or Informal Writing
  • Organization / Structure of Text
  • Level of complexity of the writing
  • Overall tone.
  • By using these features in writing, different
meanings of the context, (what the story / text
is about) are shown to the audience.

4
Tone
  • The attitude or emotion implied by the author.
  • The tone an author uses in a piece helps to
    communicate ideas.
  • For example the sentence Thats fine. can have
different meanings depending on the context in
    which it is used.
  • It may be said matter-of-factly, sarcastically,
    or with sympathy.
  • Tone in writing is similar to tone in speaking.

5
Tone can be
  • Formal, tragic, angry, kindly, cheerful,
    sarcastic, personal, impersonal, humorous,
    ironic, bitter, serious, whitty, sympathetic,
    haunting, suspenseful, angry, melancholic,
    tender, passionate, etc
  • It can reflect the entire range of human emotions
  • The tone of a how to article, for example, should
be simple and straightforward, while the tone of
a comedy piece should be playful and light.

6
Tools used to create tone
  • Obviously the author carefully selects words to
create the tone of the poem, but they can use
other poetic tools as well, such as hyperbole,
    understatement, irony, and paradox.
  • Therefore, tone is the way a writer uses words
(connotation), creates images, chooses details ,
uses language and structures sentences to present
a certain attitude or feeling to the reader about
    his/her writing topic.

7
Mood
  • Is the overall feeling a reader has about a piece
    of writing.
  • We look at the words in the poem to help us get
the mood of the poem. Ask the question how do I
    know?
  • Words to describe mood cheerful, relieved,
    gloomy, bleak, uncertain, bittersweet, relaxed,
    hopeless, tense, furious, disappointed, dreamy,
    content, satisfied, inspired, etc.

8
Other tools the author uses to create emotion.
(not limited to tone)
  • Understatement -
  • Hyperbole
  • Irony
  • Paradox
