LISTENING TEXT
  • A TRIP TO PERU
  • Lia is planning to visit Peru. Listen to her
conversation with a clerk at the travel agency
(TA) about possible ways to travel.

17
  • TA Hello, can I help you?
  • LIA Yes, I hope so. I want to take a trip to
    Peru.
  • TA Oh, thats a beautiful country. Have you
    been there before?
  • LIA No, but Ive heard a lot about it.
  • TA Are you traveling alone?
  • LIA Yes, I am.

18
  • TA So, would you like to go with a tour group?
  • LIA Well, I like to be independent. I enjoy
looking around at the things in my own time. I
dont like being hurried from one place to the
next. But I dont know if its possible to travel
    by myself.

19
  • TA Oh, certainly, its possible. But you might
find it difficult because its your first time.
  • LIA Is it dangerous to travel alone?
  • TA Not really. Well, not in big towns where
there are other tourists. I just think you might
    be lonely on your own.

20
  • LIA Mm. I suppose so. Well do you suggest?
  • TA Lets see. What kind of things do you like
    doing?
  • LIA Well, I enjoy visiting historical places and
    I like going to museums.
  • TA Well, there are many famous historical
    sights in Peru.

21
  • LIA Yes. But I also love mountains. Id like to
go somewhere in the Andes. And Ive heard the
animals and plants are really interesting in
    Peru.
  • TA Mmm. I think I know the perfect place for
    you.
  • LIA Oh, good.

22
  • TA Yes. Its called Cuzco. Its a city high up
in the Andes. Its not far from the ancient city
    of Machu Picchu.
  • LIA Oh, yes! Id really like to see that.
  • TA You could fly from Lima, the capital of Peru,
to Cuzco. We could book you into a hotel in Cuzco
whenever you wanted to. Youd be able to get to
lots of different places from there.

23
  • LIA Thats a great idea. I would have the best
of both worlds. I could travel by myself to Cuzco
and stay in a hotel and when I wanted some
company, I could join a tour group for a few
    days.
  • TA Exactly. Look, heres a brochure that lists
    our tours from Cuzco.

24
  • LIA Great, thanks. Now, can you tell me, how
much the airfare to Cuzco is?
  • TA Well, it depends when you want to go (fade
    out)

25
