Gender Issues
  • The traditional use of the universal "he" appears
    biased toward men and against women.
  • Each student should save his questions toward the
    end.
  • Some groups and individuals have used
    non-standard pronouns, hoping they will become
    standard
  • hu, hus, hum, humself (for s/he, his/hers,
    him/her, himself/herself)
  • For now, just try to vary the order of he or she,
    she/he as much as possible.

  • pronouns must agree with antecedents in person

    him, his, they, them, their, one, everybody, etc.

  • Dont confuse your reader by writing in 3rd
    person and switching to 2nd or 1st person and
    vice versa.
  • When a person comes to class, you should have
    homework ready. (incorrect)

    have homework ready. (correct)
