Title: Biomechanics surgery

1
Biomechanics surgery
  • What have we learnt so far?
  • Can you and your partner define the following?
  • Speed, acceleration, momentum, impulse, friction,
    drag, angular momentum

2
Mass and weight
  • Mass and weight are different
  • Mass is the total amount of matter in a body
  • Weight is the force due to gravity on a mass-
towards the centre of the earth
  • If the mass of a sprinter is 50kg then their
    weight would be 50 x 10 500 newtons
  • On the moon where the gravitational pull is only
1.67 newtons per kg what would their weight be?

3
Distance and displacement
  • Distance is the total distance that a body
    travels measured in meters
  • But displacement is the shortest distance between
    the start and the finish
  • Draw a diagram to illustrate this
  • In which sport is distance 400m but diplacement
    0m?

4
Vectors and scalars
  • Quantities are either vectors or scalars
  • Scalars have magnitude- in other words you know
    how big they are.
  • Vectors have magnitude and direction
  • Are weight and mass vectors or scalars?
  • What about distance and displacement?
