  • On June 30, 2004 Colin Powell went to Sudan to
    view the situation.
  • He said there were definite signs of genocide.
  • US began writing a plan for the UN to place
    economic sanctions on Sudan.

24
Problems for the US
  • If the United States makes Sudan mad then they
may not help us in the war on Terrorism.
  • Since Osama bin Laden once lived in Sudan we need
them to help us in the war.

25
UN Response
  • United Nations World Food Program has provided
food to 82 out of 154 refugee camps.
  • They demanded that the government of Sudan
    disarm the rebels.
  • They have not yet passed a resolution to place
    economic sanctions on Sudan.

26
Why no sanctions?
  • Both China and France get large amounts of oil
    from Sudan.
  • They do not want to make Sudans government mad.

27
Purpose of the United Nations
  • Keep international peace and security
  • Develop friendly relations among nations
  • Solving international economic, social, cultural
    and humanitarian problems
  • Promoting respect for human rights and
    fundamental freedoms
  • Organize the actions of nations in doing the
    above things.

  • Enforce economic sanctions
  • Send in Military troops
