Title: Indirect Objects and Indirect Object Pronouns

1
Indirect Objects and Indirect Object Pronouns
  • (AWESOME!!!)

2
What is an Indirect Object??
  • The indirect object of a statement receives the
action of the verb indirectly or better said the
indirect object receives the direct object.
  • The indirect object is 99.999999999 of the time
    a PERSON.
  • Look at this example
  • Santa Clause sent the gift to Billy.

3
Santa Clause sent the gift to Billy
  • Who is the subject (doer of the action) Santa
    Clause.
  • What was the action sent
  • What did Santa send the gift (DIRECT OBJECT)
  • Who did Santa send the gift to? to Billy
    (Indirect Object)
  • The indirect object answers the question Who did
    Santa send the gift to?

4
More Examples
  • John threw the ball to Joe.
  • What did John throw? (Direct Object)
  • Who did John throw the ball to? (Indirect
    Object)
  • Mary gave the money to Ana and Sara.
  • What did Mary give? (Direct Object)
  • Who did Mary give the money to? (Indirect Object)

5
Indirect Object Pronouns
  • To avoid repeating the persons name that is the
indirect object we replace their name with an
indirect object pronoun (OMG!!!). Look at these
    examples.
  • Santa Clause sent the gift to him.
  • John threw the ball to him.
  • Mary gave the money to them.

6
Indirect Object Pronouns
  • In English the Indirect object pronouns are
always preceded by (that means something is in
front of them) the preposition to or for. So
here are the English Indirect Object Pronouns or
    I.O.P.s
  • to/for me
  • to/for you
  • to/for him or her
  • to/for us
  • to/for you all
  • to/for them
  • Remember that the Indirect object of a statement
    is almost always a person!!!

7
Indirect Objects in Spanish (Who Dat?????)
  • Now read these statements in Spanish and identify
    the INDIRECT object.
  • Drew Brees tiró la pelota a Jeremy Shockey.
  • Roger Goodell dio el trofeo a Sean Payton.
  • Señor Spoor dio un día libre a nosotros.
  • Jerry Seinfeld dijo un chiste a George y Kramer.
  • Remember we are asking the question to whom to
    find the indirect object.

8
Indirect Object Pronouns in Spanish (WTH???)
  • The indirect object pronoun (in
    Spanish-pronombres de complemento indirecto) look
very similar to the direct object pronouns
(crud!!), but there are easy ways to tell if they
are direct object or indirect object pronouns.
  • First lets look at the INDIRECT object pronouns.
  • Singular Plural
  • Me to/for me nos to/for us
  • Te to/for you os to/for you all
  • Le to/for you(formal) les to/for you all
  • Le to/for him/her les to/for them
  • Notice the difference in the meanings of these
pronouns. The to/for in Spanish is implied with
    these pronouns.

9
Indirect Object Pronouns in Spanish (Arent these
the same things we use with gustar???)
  • Now compare the DIRECT object pronouns and the
    INDIRECT object pronouns in Spanish
  • Indirect Object Direct Object
  • me me
  • te te
  • le lo/la
  • nos nos
  • les los/las
  • Notice that the third person forms are the only
ones that are different. INDIRECT object pronouns
come from Hawaii because you get a LE with it
(you know-the flower necklace they put around
your neck). Also their meanings are different
    (HOW???).

10
Examples using Pronombres de Complemento
Indirecto. (what does that mean??)
  • Instead of Saying
  • Santa Clause mandó un regalo a Billy.
  • Say
  • Santa Clause le mandó un regalo.
  • Le took the place of to Billy.

11
So how would we
  • Replace the INDIRECT object with an INDIRECT
object pronoun in the following sentences???
  • Drew Brees tiró la pelota a Jeremy Shockey.
  • Roger Goodell dio un trofeo a Sean Payton
  • Señor Spoor dio un día libre a nosotros
  • Jerry Seinfeld dijo un chiste a George y Kramer.

12
like this!!!!
  • Drew Brees le tiró la pelota.
  • Roger Goodell le dio un trofeo.
  • Señor Spoor nos dio un día libre.
  • Jerry Seinfeld les dijo un chiste.

13
Pronoun Placement
  • Where do object pronouns always go??????
  • Remember your rules
  • 1Before the conjugated verb!!
  • Drew Brees le tiró la pelota.
  • 2On the end of an infinitive
  • Yo te voy a mandar un regalo.
  • Yo voy a mandarte un regalo.
  • 3On the end of a present participle
  • Ella me está escribiendo una carta.
  • Ella está escribiéndome una carta. (Remember the
    3 syllable rule)

14
Theres more Ay, caramba!
  • Why cant things just be easy???
  • In Spanish when you use the indirect object
pronouns (especially le and les) you have to tag
the pronoun to emphasize or clarify who you are
talking about. Really, you are being redundant
(define that word) when you do this. Check it
    out
  • Drew Brees le tiró la pelota a Jeremy Shockey.
  • Notice that we added the INDIRECT object back to
    the sentence.

15
Tag Lines
  • When you use indirect object pronouns you must
say both the pronoun and the indirect object
(always when saying le or les). You dont
necessarily have to repeat the indirect object
when you use me, te, or nos but do it anyways to
    practice!!!!
  • Tag lines always have a and the person after it
  • a mí, a ti, a ud., a Pablo, a ella, a nosotros, a
    uds, a María y Ana, a ellos.etc, etc, etc,
    etc, etc

16
Tag Lines
  • Look at the following examples
  • Roger Goodell le dio un trofeo a Sean Payton.
  • Señor Spoor nos dio un día libre a nosotros.
  • Jerry Seinfeld les dijo un chiste a George y a
    Kramer (a ellos)
  • Ana me dio cien dólares a mí.
  • TAG THE INDIRECT OBJECT PRONOUN
  • a.ha!

17
Direct or Indirect Object Pronoun
  • Tell whether the following sentences have a
direct or indirect object pronoun (OMGhow do you
    know???)
  • Libby me conoce.
  • Jaime me cocinó el almuerzo a mí.
  • Santa Clause lo mandó a Billy.
  • Uds. los leyeron.
  • Señor Spoor les dio mucha tarea a Uds.
  • La directora nos trajo un pastel a nosotros
  • Mike Tyson te pegó (hit).
