Title: WASTE MANAGEMENT

1
WASTE MANAGEMENT
  • Waste Management has several dimensions-engineerin
    g,economic,Geographic,social and management.Its
basic purpose is to minimise the overall waste in
a given system.Waste here refers to waste of all
kinds or resources, but especially the material
    resources which constitute a significant
portion. To reduce waste we have to maximise the
    use of resources.

2
Classification of Waste
  • Waste can be classified on the basis of
    (1)resource wasted(2)origin(3)property
  • (4)recoverability.
  • Measurement of Waste
  • Wastivity Waste(W)/Total Input(I)
  • Gross WastivityTotal Waste/Total Input
  • Net WasteTotal Waste-Waste recycled within the
    system.Net WastivityNet Waste/Total input.

3
Wastivity Productivity
  • Waste is an indirect measure of productivity. If
wastivity is checked the effect, productivity will
    be improved
  • CAUSES OF WASTE.i)faulty planning
    policies,systems and procedures ii)Faulty
    Organisation structure,iii)environmental
    pressuresiv)tardinessv)lack of accountabilityvi)un
    awareness of technological advances vii)non
    responsiveness to automation/computerisationviii)
    wrong specifications,standards,codes

4
  • ix)wrong raw materials x)lack of inventory
control xi)lack of proper storage, layout of
    facilities,handling of materialxii) communication
gaps xiii)faulty work method xiv)less emphasis on
PPC xv)lax supervision and control xvi)Wrong
    recruitment/selectionpolicies xvii)lack of
    motivation /incentives xviii)poor working
    conditions xix)unsafe practices xx)Poor
    industrial relations xxi)Maintenace failure

5
  • xii)Power failure xxiii)Distribution problems
xxiv)less attention to waste segregation and
    collection xxv)technological obsolescence
    xxvi)Miscellaneous causes.
  • Systematic approach to Waste Reduction
  • Waste collection system
  • Recycling of wastes
  • Waste disposal system(salvablenonsalvable waste)

6
Management of Surplus and Scrap
  • What is surplus? When purchases have been made in
larger quantities than the usual requirements.
when operations are suddenly curtailed, when at
the materials procurement,on a/c of some error or
    miscalculations.When the usual materials are
remdered useless due to change in materials
specifications. When the project is completed some
quantities are bound to be left out.
