ORGANIK started out as a nursery providing
seedling plants to farmers.

Today ORGANIK sows, grows, processes, and
distributes more than eighty five varieties of
vegetables.

For years vegetable growing has been associated
with Dalat.

The climate is suited to growing Western style
vegetables.

Dr. Nguyen Ba Hung is a key player in developing
Dalats vegetable industry.

In 1997 he researched sustainable, organic
vegetable production.

He concluded, Farmers need improved seedling
varieties.

So, he set up nurseries.

Now farmers could buy new tomato, cabbage,
strawberry and potato seedlings.

Then foreign growers ordered wasabi, cabbage and
spinach seedlings.

Later this nursery called Hung Thien began
growing, processing and exporting romaine lettuce.

Thirteen containers of Romaine Hearts were
shipped to Sogo, in Taiwan.

Hung Thien now had

• a nursery

• contracted
• growing land

• but no processing facility

So, in late 2004, a small but modern processing
centre was built.

It included
a sanitized processing area
a receiving area
a vacuum cooling unit capable of handling 5 T
of product / day
and a 6 tonne cold storage room

The new facility enabled Hung Thien, now known
as, ORGANIK, to develop a presence in the
domestic market.

By late 2004 ORGANIK was supplying
Vietnams 5 star hotels from its 85 item
product range.

ORGANIK guaranteed the safety of its
vegetables.

To minimize residues biological fertilizers were
used.

Sticky yellow bug catchers were put in the
fields.
Insect repelling flowers were planted at the edge
of fields.

The customers deserved quality products. But
? how could quality be achieved
consistently?
? how could it be measured?

The International Marketing Organization (IMO)
was asked to provide ORGANIK with a quality
process.

IMO inspectors, from outside Vietnam, visited
ORGANIK in June, 2005.

In August of 2005 ORGANIK was awarded a EUREPGAP
Certificate.
This was the first EUREPGAP Certificate issued to
a growing/processing company in Vietnam.

ORGANIK has recently bought 4 hectares of
growing land.

The farm will

• help ORGANIK respond to the increasing demand
  for high value, organic vegetables.

• become a learning centre where students can see
  modern agricultural practices in action.

• act as a model for other farmers in Dalat.

There is the Director, Dr. Hung, with a PhD in
plant genetics and breeding improvement from
France.
There is also his wife, the Financial and
Processing Manager, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Phuong.
