1
Writing the Big Introduction Conclusion
2
Things to Remember
  • By the end of this PPT you will have the Big
Introduction and Big Conclusion to the entire
    paper written.
  • The slides are written as if you have a Subthesis
I, II and III. If this is not the case, think
only in terms of what you have.
  • WORDS ON PAPER!
  • You have 5 minutes to write each slide

3
The big Introduction
  • Write 1-2 sentences that develop the theme or
    universal truth behind both novels.
  • Think about what the novels reveal about
  • a specific segment of society
  • a specific era
  • something historically significant that affects
    the conscience of the nation
  • Remember that this is meant to give the reader
context, but the characters are not mentioned.
    Its a more universal statement.

4
Introduction of 1st Novel in Intro
  • Now, Introduce 1st novel character(s)
  • For Bigger Thomas, a poor and angry young black
man, in Richard Wrights Native Son, the fear of
white society becomes his greatest nemesis.
  • Next, write 1-2 sentences of plot that clearly
    summarizes the characters transformation from
subthesis I to II and finally to III

5
Incorporate 2nd novel into Intro
  • Choose a transition word or phrase to tie
    together character one and two.
  • Like Bigger, the invisible narrator of Ralph
Ellisons The Invisible Man struggles to
  • Now write 1-2 sentences of plot that clearly
summarizes how this character gets from subthesis
    I to II to III

6
Adding the Thesis Statement
  • Simply add the thesis sentence to the end of the
    introduction
  • Now, re-read the previous sentence with the
thesis. Do you need to put in a transition
sentence or phrase to make this read more
    smoothly?
  • Quickly reread the entire introduction and make
adjustments to word choice, transitions, context.

7
The Big Conclusion
  • In 1-2 sentences, evaluate who the main
    characters become in the end.
  • Start the sentence with a word like Ultimately,
In the end, Because of, In the aftermath, etc.
  • Now, summarize how this happens but without
stating more plot or any new information. Think
of this as a recap of the paper, but in only 2-3
    sentences.

8
The philosophical ending
  • So whats the point in all this? What insight
should your audience/reader take from the
    characters?
  • In 1-2 sentences tell your reader what the
experiences of the characters reveal in terms of
    the real world.
  • Look back at the topic sentences of the Big
    Introduction as your guide

9
Now What?
  • The Big Intro. is the 1st paragraph of the
paper, then you will add the Sub I paper then
the Sub II paper and then the Sub III paper.
  • Remember that each Subthesis is equivalent to an
    essay.
  • An essay has an introduction, body paragraphs and
    a conclusion
  • The Big Conclusion is the last paragraph of the
    entire paper.
