IMPORTANCE
  • Once you have hired staff it is important that
    you keep their skills up-to-date.
  • In addition to this you may also want to give
    them new skills.
  • Can then do different jobs, have greater job
    satisfaction and motivation.

TYPES OF TRAINING
  • Induction Training
  • Training given to new employees. Put them at
    their ease.
  • Makes them aware of organisational procedures and
    policies
  • Could include introducing them to new colleagues,
    video of the firm, rules of the firm

  • On-the-Job Training
  • Training that takes place at the employees place
    of work
  • Could include watching another employee doing the
    job sometimes called Sitting Next to Nellie.
  • They could be given a mentor who gives them
    advice in the new job. Often called Coaching.
  • Could go round different departments learning
    what each does. This is called Job Rotation.

  • Off-the-Job Training
  • This is training done away from the place of
    work.
  • This could include going to college on day
    release. Or going to a conference.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT
  • This is seen as a long term plan for improvement.
  • The plan is agreed by the manager and employee,
    often done as part of the appraisal system.
  • Training is used in order to develop staff.

  • Become better at the job
  • Staff are more flexible
  • Motivation increases
  • Staff produce more
  • Easier to introduce change
  • Improved image of the firm
  • Fewer accidents
  • Reduced waste

COSTS OF STAFF TRAINING
  • Staff may leave for a better job
  • High cost of providing training
  • While on training work is not being done
  • Staff may want a pay rise

MOTIVATION
  • It is important to have systems set up that will
    motivate workers to work hard.
  • Issuing bonuses
  • Have profit-share or share save schemes
  • Have work councils or quality circles
  • Organise social events
  • Organise staff training
