Title: Acceleration is the rate at

1
ACCELERATION
  • Acceleration is the rate at
  • which velocity changes.

2
  • Acceleration is created by forces
  • The pull of gravity accelerates objects 9.8 m/sec
    for every second they fall.
  • 9.8 m/sec/sec or 9.8 m/sec2
  • All objects fall at this rate, regardless of
    mass!

They fall at the same speed!!!
3
When you accelerate, you feel forces!
  • When the car goes faster, you are pressed back in
    your seat
  • Turning pushed to the side
  • Acceleration is measured in Gravities (G)
  • 1 G is equal to the pull of the Earths gravity
    (9.8 m/sec2)
  • When a fighter jet turns, it can pull 9-10 G of
    acceleration

4
Any change in velocity creates acceleration
  • Positive acceleration - velocity increases.
  • Negative acceleration (deceleration) - velocity
    decreases.
  • Remember that velocity has direction, so
    acceleration occurs whenever direction changes

5
CIRCULAR MOTION
  • Centripetal acceleration is the acceleration that
    occurs in circular motion
  • An object traveling in a curve is always changing
    direction, therefore, acceleration is occurring.
  • Like the merry-go-round at the park!

6
EXAMPLES OF ACCELERATION
  • Roller Coaster
  • Positive going down the hill
  • Negative - slowing down
  • Centripetal curves, loops, etc.
  • Race Car?
  • Rocket?
