Preparing Todays Studentsfor Tomorrows World
Teaching the
iGENERATION
  • A focused conversation with Solution Tree
authorsBill Ferriter, Adam Garry, and Meg
    Ormiston.
  • August 26-28, 2010

2
  • Inheriting a world with nearly universal access
to the Internet, the iGeneration is almost
universally plugged in. Ear buds hang from
backpacks, and cell phones are stuffed into
nearly every pocketXboxes have replaced Ataris,
digital images have replaced negatives, and
high-speed connections have replaced the dial-up
modems that left all of us waiting for decades.
  • Bill Ferriter Adam Garry

3
  • This is the first generation in human history in
which the fortunes of youth growing up far apart
will be demonstrably linked by increasingly
    powerful global socioeconomic, political and
    demographic realities.
  • Marcelo Orozco-Suarez Carolyn Sattin

4
  • In fact, one of the saddest but most common
conditions in elementary school computer labs is
the children are being trained to use Word, Excel
    and PowerPoint.
  • I consider that criminal, because children should
    be making things, communicating, exploring,
    sharing, not running office automation
    tools.  Nicholas Negroponte

5
  • Engaged students and teachers are not always
quiet. Students are not all sitting in their
seats, doing the same thing. Active engagement
can look messy to an outside observer.
  • Yet, if structured correctly, this type of
classroom can be an extraordinarily rich learning
    environment. Meg Ormiston

6
  • Paralleling the rapid expansion of broadband
Internet access, the availability of mobile
devices, the rise of digital video recorders, the
growth of the gaming industry, and the decreasing
costs of personal video and photography
    equipment, access toand engagement withvisual
content exploded in the first decade of the 21st
    Century.
  • Bill Ferriter Adam Garry

7
  • Collaborative Web 2.0 tools provide instant
access to distant colleagues and information,
allowing educators everywhere to expand their
reach across the country or around the globe.
  • Tapping this potential will require a shift in
thinking, about networking as a way of taking
    personal responsibility for professional
    growth.Meg Ormiston

8
  • Ever optimistic, techno-cheerleaderspicture
something that doesnt yet exist classrooms
illuminating the wide, wide world, teachers
    becoming twenty-first-century techno-facilitators,
and students at screens inspired to ponder,
imagine, reflect, analyze, memorize, recite and
    create. Mark Bauerlein
