What is a Theme?

• A theme is a revelation about our lives theme is
  a discovery of truth about our own human
  experience.
• Themes focus on the Big Ideas
• Understanding the nature of love
• Accepting responsibility
• Understanding loss
• Dealing with ambition
• Discovering the joys and problems of friendship

Read the Story

• Read the story! Then you will be ready to fill
  out the summary.

• Find the important events that stand out
• What life lesson is being taught?
• Comment on it!
• (Teenagers are full of opinions! Should not be a
  big deal.)

Where can I find the theme?You will not find a
sentence that starts off saying,The theme is
right here.

• Use these questions
• How has the main character changed over the
  course of the story? What has he or she
  discovered by the storys end?
• Which scenes or passages strike you as especially
  important to the story? What ideas about life do
  they suggest?
• What is the storys title? Does it reveal
  anything special about the story?
