Title: Weathering and Soil

Weathering and Soil
  • By Kathleen Schurman
  • Ryan Hart
  • Nicole Beardsley
  • Matt Nocito

2
Weathering and Soil
  • The different kinds of weathering are
  • (chemical) hydrologist, spherical, dissolution,
    oxidation, plant acid/reaction to acid.
  • (mechanical) abrasion, exfoliation, frost
    wedging, biological activity.
  • Soil is the combination of organic matter with
    particles of weathered minerals

Soil Composition
  • Soil Composition- varies from region to region
and is affected by the type of bedrock it derives
from, and the climate from which it forms in.

5
Soil Profile A
  • Horizon A- top soil mineral matter mixed with
    some organic matter.

6
Soil Profile B
  • Horizon B- mostly clay with very little weathered
    parent material.

7
Soil Profile C
  • Horizon C- partially weathered parent material.

8
Parent Material
  • Bedrock- it varies from region to region, is the
last layer of soil (bottom). It will influence
the development of all the soil above it.

9
Soil and Climate
  • There are three main types of soil.
  • Laterite
  • Pedocal
  • Pedalfer

10
Laterite
  • Forms in a hot, wet tropical area. When it
    dries, it becomes water-proof.

11
Pedocal
  • Forms in a dry, hot climate. It can be found in
Western United States in areas that have grass
and brush vegetation. Contains less clay than
Pedalfer, and it contains large amounts of
    calcite.

12
Pedalfer
  • It forms in a climate that receives sixty three
centimeters of rain a year. Can be found in the
Eastern Part of the United States. Has a red to
brown color, and contains large amounts of iron,
    aluminum and clay.
