Candy Lab Taxonomy

• Taxonomy is naming, describing, and classifying
  organisms into different categories on the basis
  of their appearance and other diagnostic
  characteristics as well as their evolutionary
  relationships.

Classify

• Classify your bag into groups with similar
  characteristics and construct a cladogram
  explaining each characteristic.
• EXAMPLE Hard and Soft candy Edible and
  Nonedible

Questions

• Why was color not a good distinguishing
  characteristic?
• When classifying did you notice the
  characteristics go from broad to specific or
  specific to broad. Why?
• Why is taxonomy important not only with living
  things but with a grocery store as well?
• Try to group your classifications into Kingdom,
  Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species.
• EXAMPLE
• Kingdom (Edible and Non-edible)
• Phylum (Hard candy, Soft candy Write, non -
  Write)
• Class (Sticks and non sticks)
• (Broad to Specific)
