does it look like? Hw do we do it? Can we give it
to others? How important is it? How do we get it?
    . . .

3
Proverbs 17

What is Wisdom?
  • How do we get it? Where does it come from? What
does it look like? Hw do we do it? Can we give it
to others? How important is it? How do we get it?
    . . .

What is it?
  • Truth applied correctly
  • The wisdom that is the subject of Proverbs is
not merely intellectual and philosophical. It is
practical, involving what the person who is wise
does in any given situation. It is ethical,
meaning that it gives moral guidance and leads to
right living. And it is religious, in that its
foundation is Gods wisdom as the book states,
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom
(9.10). William David Reyburn and Euan McG. Fry,
A Handbook on Proverbs, UBS handbook series
Helps for translators (New York United Bible
    Societies, 2000), 15.

Cont.
  • Commentaries on Proverbs generally give some sort
of definition of the meaning of wisdom. Etienne
    Charpentier, for instance, says this
  • Wisdom is the art of living a good life, seeking
what leads to life and not to death. It is a
reflection on the great human questions life,
death, love, suffering, evil, mens relationship
with God and with one another, social life, etc.

Forms
  • The attempt to identify and isolate wisdom
literature on the basis of form criticism has not
been successful. That is, one cannot say that the
proverb is the characteristic form of wisdom
since a great deal of what must be reckoned as
wisdom literature is not in the proverbial
form.?? Wisdom cannot be confined to certain
forms, nor can certain forms be confined to
wisdom literature. Nevertheless, as a matter of
observation and classification, it is possible to
assert that certain forms are most frequently
found in wisdom literature. Duane A. Garrett,
vol. 14, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs,
electronic ed., Logos Library System The New
    American Commentary (Nashville Broadman Holman
    Publishers, 2001, c1993), 29.
