Title: GPS
1Today in Life Science !
- GPS
- Students will investigate the features of the
process of scientific inquiry.
- Agenda
- Science Is . . Due Friday (next week 6th)
- GRACE Notes
- Did you complete the following?
- Coffee Filter Lab turned in to bin?
- Vocab Booklet Template (keep to study)
2More Practice Observation vs. Inference
- Qualitative observation no numbers
- Quantitative observations numbers
- Inference something you figure out,
opinion
On your notebook paper labeled WARM-UP write
qualitative observation, quantitative observation
and Inference. Then pick on picture from the
next slide and write an example of each for the
picture you select.

4All Living things . . . .
We did this on Tuesday if you did not read all
4 pages please go to http//my.hrw.com Ascience31
e4z7m
- Read pages 38 41. You and your seat partner can
read silently or read together. Take turns 2
foot voices. - When you get to a characteristic of living things
write it down on your paper. - All Living Things . . .
- Take turns writing or assign a scribe.
- YOU HAVE 10 MINUTES
5 On the Living or Non Living worksheet write these
five items down. Based on what you read in your
group, are the following items living or not?
- Rock
- Cut Flowers
- Beta Fish
- Burning candle
- Seeds

12GRACE Vocabulary Strategy

13- Growth is getting bigger.
- Reproduction is the forming of a new individual
or offspring. - Adjust is to react to something in the
environment. Adapt is to change over many
generations/time. - Cells are the basic units of structure.
Chemicals are substances that make up cells. - Energy is the ability to work and it comes from
food or sunlight.
14Quiz is Friday6 steps Sci method, GRACE,
quantitative and qualitative observations and
inferences.
- Recap
- Coffee Filter Lab make drawing awesome
- 4 Vocab Word Template finish, but do not
turn it in. - Science Is . . .
- Getting to Know You ????
- Name of the game is password
15G
- Growth is getting bigger.
- To develop is to change as you grow. Example
learning to talk is development. - How would you test growth?
- Weigh it every week.
16R
- Reproduction is the forming of a new individual
or offspring. - There are two types of reproduction
- Sexual Reproduction two parents
- Asexual Reproduction one parent
17Sexual Reproduction
18Asexual Reproduction

Page 272 and 248
20- Regeneration Many animals can regrow
- damaged body parts.
21- New plants that grow from the parent plant
22- Stems cut and put in water will grow roots
23How could you test reproduction?
- Maybe watch it and see if more appear or find
two, put them together and see what happens -)
24A2 Adjust and Adapt
- To adjust is to react to something in the
environment. - stimulus causes a response
- An adaptation is an inherited change.
DanielPedia Intro

26- Did you jump when that last picture came up on
your screen? - If so, that is a response to something you saw.
The picture was the stimulus and your reaction
was the response.
27Adaptations
- fish fins and scales allow
it to - live in H2O
- Cactus can survive
- the desert because
- they store water and
- the waxy covering
- conserves water.
-
28Can we test A2 ?
- Since adaptation occur over many generations, you
cant really test it but look at a species over
time. - But how about adjusting? How could we test this?
- Put it in a cold room? Try to scare it?
29C2 Cells with similar Chemicals
- The cell is the basic unit of structure of an
organism. - Some organisms are one cell
- like bacteria, yeast and amoebas
- Plants and animals are multicellular
3rs stoped here on Mon before pictures
30Cells with similar Chemicals
- The cell is the basic unit of structure of an
organism. - Some organisms are one cell
- like bacteria, yeast and amoebas
- Plants and animals are multicellular
31Cells with similar Chemicals
- The cell is the basic unit of structure of an
organism. - Some organisms are one cell
- like bacteria, yeast and amoebas
- Plants and animals are multicellular
32Test?
- You will need a microscope for this
33E Energy
- The sun is the source of most of the energy on
Earth. Plants and other autotrophs use the sun,
then we eat them. -
Plankton krill blue fish
34- Autotrophs (producers) can make their own food
using the sun. Ex. plants, some protists
bacteria. - Heterotrophs (consumers) can not make their own
food. To get energy they must eat or absorb
nutrients. Ex all animals and fungi, some
protists, and bacteria. - Homeostatis organisms ability to maintain
stable internal conditions.

35Test for Energy?
See if it will eat something. See if it is warmer
than room temperature See if it eliminates waste.
