There was a serious housing shortage in 1945.
during the war families had to take residence in
army camps and overcrowding in Glasgow was a
serious problem.
In 1945 Scotland imported 2000 two-storeyed
wooden houses direct from Sweden to help solve
the problem.

The Education Act was inherited from coalition
government and in 1947 put into operation.
The age at which children could leave school was
raised to 15. In addition a childs educational
path was determined by them passing the 11 plus
exam.
This led to dual system of secondary education,
often considered to be socially divisive with
children forced down a vocational path rather
than academic one.

The post war boom and devastation caused by WW2
meant employment was necessary to rebuild the
country.
Jobs were created in industry as well as schemes
such as road building and construction.
By 1946 Labour had brought the unemployment
figure down to 2.5. This led Dalton (Chancellor
of the Exchequer) to claim full employment was
the greatest revolution brought about by Labour.

The National Health Act of 1948 provided unified
health care and treatment, free at point of
usage. Health Act, 1948
- However, the Act was delayed for 2 years.
- This was due to opposition to the bill from
doctors with 64 against its introduction. This
was largely because many felt the State was
taking too active a part in Doctors work and
also due to the loss of fee paying patients.
Aneurin Bevan, Health Minister decided to get
doctors support by compensating them, including
paying 75p per NHS patient in their practice.

- The National Insurance (Industrial Injuries Act
July 1946) provided benefits for all workers
affected in the course of their work. - Health Act, 1948
- This Act provided the worker (who was injured at
work) with 45 shillings (2.25) for himself, 16
shillings (80p) for his wife and 7 shillings
(approx 37p) for the first child.shillings(80p)

This payment lasted for six months and if the
injury continued the worker was entitled to a
pension. However, in such a case payments were
more expensive than those given to the
