2Proficiency
- Each State has the ability to establish their own
proficiency standards and assessment tools. - New Jersey Elementary/Middle Schools will use the
following mandated assessments - NJASK Grades 3,4,5,6,7, and 8
- MES opts to use NJPASS for Grade 2
3NJASKNEW JERSEY ASSESSMENT OF SKILLS AND
KNOWLEDGE
- NJASK 2008 saw a increase in test rigor and
rescoring to establish more challenging
proficiency goals for Grades 5 through 8. - NJASK 2009 saw an increase in test rigor for
Grades 3 and 4 to establish more challenging
proficiency goals. - NJASK 2010 saw a change in the use of calculators
in the Math sections of all grades.
4RATIONALE FOR RAISING BENCHMARKS FOR
PROFICIENCYThe State of New Jersey has changed
the cutoff to redefine the expectations for
determining proficiency. One result of raising
the achievement standards is that more students
may fall into the partially proficient
category.Raising the standards at these
grades will increase the likelihood that students
receive the assistance and intervention they need
to succeed in high school before they enter ninth
grade.-Lucille DavyNJ Dept. of Ed.
