Title: The Jet Stream
1The Jet StreamThe Gulf Stream
2Jet Stream a fairly narrow zone of very strong
winds in the upper troposphere.
- Winds
- Most common in middle latitudes
- Usually from the west
3- Air masses have different temperature and
humidity characteristics. - Where two different air masses meet a jet stream
forms. - When people refer to the jet stream they mean
the polar jet stream. This is the strongest jet
stream.
4- Low pressure cells bring inclement weather. The
jet stream moves them or blocks them, affecting
the weather in different locations.
5The Gulf Stream is a powerful, warm surface ocean
current in the North Atlantic Ocean.
- One of the strongest known currents
6As the Gulf Stream reaches Cape Hatteras, NC the
cold current that flows from the north separates
the Gulf Stream from the coast.
7When the Gulf Stream waters from the south
(Florida) combine with the cold winds, a dense
concentration of fog forms with an immense heat
transfer causing atmospheric storms to intensify.
8The Gulf Stream carries warm water from near the
Equator up the eastern coast of North
America.The warmer ocean temperatures moderate
the air temperature over land.Air travelling
over the warm Gulf Stream water picks up moisture.
