Photoacoustic Ablation
Phenomenon commonly used in analysis of gases,
liquids solids (i.e. photoacoustic spectroscopy)

1. Fiber is inserted into adipose tissue.
2. Total internal reflection only delivers energy to
   tip of fiber.
3. Polyimide coating burns back 1-2 mm carbon char
   builds up.
4. Carbon on tip and surrounding tissue absorb laser
   energy and creates white hot ablation point.
5. Pulsed energy removes material so quickly that
   the surrounding material absorbs very little heat
   (minimizing thermal damage)
6. Much of the energy is transferred into miniature
   localized shock waves.
7. Fat cell membranes are mechanically ruptured, not
   just melted.
