Alexanders Conquests
  • Two years after Alexander became king of
    Macedonia, he invaded the Persian Empire.
  • He attacked a large Persian army that was
    attacking him with arrows.
  • He did not retreat and when the Persians saw them
    charging, the Persians fled.
  • Alexander then conquered Syria and Phoenicia.
  • He then conquered Egypt and became a pharaoh.

A Great Empire
  • Alexanders army had to face Persia one last
    time.
  • Persias army was larger.
  • Alexander still defeated them.
  • Everywhere Alexander went, he was victorious.
  • His army eventually stopped their conquests
    because of the monsoons.
  • They decided to retreat back to Greece, but
    Alexander died before he could return.
  • Alexanders legacy was the creation of a vast
    empire that stretched into Europe, Asia, and
    Africa.
  • He spread Greek culture to these region and
    adopted many Asian ways.

  • After Alexanders death, a violent power struggle
    developed.
  • His empire was divided among three of his
    generals.
  • During the Hellenistic Age, new Greek city states
    developed.
  • The cities became centers of Greek Culture.
  • Young people read Homer and other Greek writers.
  • Public buildings were built in the Greek style.

  • His inventions include, pulleys, a screw that
    carries water, floating objects, and he described
    how levers worked.
  • Archimedes built on works by Pythagoras and
    Euclid.
  • Pythagoras created theories about numbers and
    music.
  • He created a school that led to the development
    of the field of geometry.
  • Euclid worked out the system of plane geometry
    that students still study today.
