• Began in China around 105 A.D.
• Became popular in Europe in the 15th century
  (when paper was imported)

4 MAIN TYPES OF PRINTMAKING

• Intaglio--printing from a cut surface
• (cutting into the printing plate, then inking
  and printing the lines)
• Lithography--printing from a flat surface
• (drawing with a greasy substance, grease absorbs
  ink)
• Serigraphy--printing with a stencil
• (also known as screen-printing)
• Relief--printing from a raised surface
• (ex. Rubber stamp, woodblock)
