• Listening is the process of giving meaning to an
  oral messageit is an important communication
  skill!!!
• Listening is NOT a natural process

• Five Steps to the Process of Listening
• 1. Hearing- Listen carefully Physical changes
  occur such as increased heart rate, increased
  respiration, and increase body temp (Deafness
  can be a problem)
• 2. Attending- Pay attention to a signal
• 3. Understanding- Take notes of key ideas (the
  process of making sense) Everyone might not get
  the same message
• 4. Responding- Give feedback to speaker
• 5. Remembering- Research states that we
  remember only 50 of what we hear immediately
  after hearing it that drops from 50 to 35
  within 8 hrs and drops 25 after 2 months

• Most listeners speed is 400-800 WPM
