Myth Because they are young, teenage girls have
easier pregnancies and healthier babies.

• Fact Teenage mothers have 26 of all low birth
  weight babies. They have higher risk of
  complications during pregnancy and birth.

Myth Teenage girls who get married are not
usually pregnant.

• Fact 2 out of 3 teenage married couples got
  married because of pregnancy. Many girls are
  left with a child by husbands who are not yet 21.

Myth Only women get custody of the baby.

• Fact Unmarried fathers have been awarded
  custody. Society is no longer assuming that only
  mothers can raise children well.

Myth If a child is placed for adoption, the
natural parents can get it back if they change
their minds.

• Fact Once a child is placed for adoption, all
  rights and responsibilities of the natural
  parents are gone. Many adoptions are open.

Myth If a woman has an abortion, she wont be
able to have a baby later on.

• Fact If an abortion is done by a properly
  trained doctor, it should not affect a womans
  ability to get pregnant and have a baby in the
  future.

ABORTION METHODS

• Most (90) are done in the 1st trimester by
  vacuum aspiration.
• Later abortions are done by inducing labor
  (saline abortion).
• Before abortion became legal, women risked their
  lives by going to unqualified people. Many women
  died.

AMNIOCENTESIS

• Some amniotic fluid is extracted around the 5th
  month of pregnancy.
• The fluid is genetically identical to the fetus.
• The fluid can be checked for genetic diseases and
  chromosome mutations.
• If the fetus has serious birth defects, the
  parents might choose to abort.
