Title: Understanding Reproduction and Chromosomes

1
Understanding Reproduction and Chromosomes
  • Carolina Biological Supply
  • 251007A
  • 179.95

2
Kit includes 4 activities
  • Activity 1 Asexual Reproduction
  • Activity 2 Chromosomes and Karyotyping
  • Activity 3 Sexual Reproduction
  • Activity 4 Genetic Disorders

3
Prior Knowledge
  • Students must have strong understanding of
meiosis and DNA prior to completing this lab.
  • Review vocabulary terms
  • Diploid
  • Haploid
  • Crossing over
  • Homologous chromosomes
  • Gametes
  • Gene
  • fertilization

4
Prior Knowledge Continued-a review of meiosis
stages is also suggested
  • Overview of meiosis

5
Learning Goals
  • Review chromosome structure and meiosis
  • Be introduced to karyotyping and genetic
    disorders
  • Compare asexual and sexual reproduction.

6
Materials (for activities 2,3, and 4)
  • 15 magnetic boards
  • 15 sets of human chromosome magnets
  • 16 plastic bags
  • Prepared microscope slides of human male and
    female chromosomes
  • Reproducible student guide including a chromosome
key and a karyotype of a normal human male.

7
Overview of Activities
  • Activity 2 Chromosomes and Karyotyping
  • Students look at prepared slides of normal male
and female chromosomes and are asked to make
    observations.
  • Class is divided into 10 groups. Half of the
groups get a bag of female chromosomes and the
other half get the male chromosmes.
  • Students are asked to examine chromosomes and
note general characteristics and then they are to
come up with a way to organize the chromosmes.
  • It is not required that students come up with an
accurate karyotype, but they should become
familiar with chromosome banding and pairing.

8
Overview of activities
  • Activity 3 Sexual Reproduction
  • This activity simulates human reproduction.
  • The male karyotype groups pair up with a female
    karyotype group from activity 2.
  • Groups having male and female karyotypes work
together to find ways in which a zygote could be
formed from the chromosomes present in two normal
    human gametes.

9
Overview of Activities
  • Activity 4 genetic disorders
  • Parent karyotypes made in activity 2 will be
    used.
  • Each group gets a chromosome packet containing a
karyotype with a specific genetic disorder.
  • After the zygote is assembled, students compare
it with the two normal parent karyotypes and
discover ways in which common genetic disorders
    are formed.

10
  • Today we are going to look at activities 2 and 4.
  • I need you to work in groups of 3 or 4 making 5
    groups total.
  • One or two people will receive the male
chromosmes and the other one to two people will
    receive the female chromosomes.
  • After assembling the parent karyotypes each group
will receive a separate bag of chromosomes
representing a zygote with a specific genetic
    disorder.
