If you look carefully at a flower, you will see
that it is made up of many different parts.
Each part has an important job or purpose.

Sepals
sepal
  • The sepals protect the flower before it opens.

Petals
  • The petals attract pollinating insects with their
    bright color and attractive scent.

Reproductive parts
  • Male - Stamen
  • Female - Pistil
  • Meiosis or sexual reproduction
  • Gives us genetic variation
  • Offspring are NOT identical
  • Involves 2 parent cells

Stamens

  • The male reproductive organs
  • The plant makes pollen in the part of the stamen
    called the anther which is held up by the
    filament.

The Pistil

  • The female reproductive organ.
  • The stigma is the top of the female part of the
    flower.
  • The pollen from another flower collects on the
    stigmas sticky surface.

The Ovary

  • The ovary protects the ovules or egg cells.
  • Pollen travels down the style to the ovules and
    fertilization takes place.
  • Now the ovules will develop into seeds.
