• France is divided into three estates
• All answer to King Louis XVI
• First Estate Clergy
• Second Estate Nobles
• Third Estate Everybody else
• Own about 65 of the land
• Represent about 98 of the population
• Only group that is taxed

• France is almost bankrupt
• Bad harvest years
• Low manufacturing
• Meanwhile, lots of money spent on luxuries
• Wars
• Marie Antoinette

Why Cant We Be Friends?

• King and Estates meet
• Third estate wants better positioning
• End up getting locked out of assembly
• 1789 Revolutionaries take Bastile
• Ammunition depot at castle
• National assembly adopts Declaration of the
  Rights of Man and the Citizen

Bring out your dead!

• January 21, 1793 King Louis XVI is beheaded
• Marie Antoinette beheaded later in the year

• The Reign of Terror!
• The Republic of Virtue
• Various groups vying for power
• Mass executions via guillotine and grapeshot
• When all of the corruption is gone, then virtue
  will come about
