Organizational Patterns
  • Chronological and Sequence

2
Chronological
  • Tells order in time. This is the most common way
of organizing information. Time order gives
events in chronological order or the order in
time in which they happened. Events in a time
order passage can be shown on a timeline.

Chronological-example
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. was a great American
leader. He was born on January 15, 1929, in
Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated from high school
in 1944 at age 15. He finished college in 1948.
In 1954, he moved to Montgomery Alabama, where he
began his fight for Civil Rights. In 1963, he led
the Civil rights March on Washington, D.C. The
next year, congress finally made segregation
illegal. On April 4, 1968, he was killed in
    Memphis, Tennessee.
  • PLACE THE MAJOR EVENTS INTO A TIMELINE
  • List the SIGNAL WORDS

Chronological-YOU TRY
  • For the story provided you need to
  • -highlight signal words
  • -chart the major events and list the key words
    in the graphic organizer

6
Sequential
  • In this type of order, a sequence of actions is
described. It instructs the reader on how to do
something. It is basically a set of directions.
Owner's manuals and cookbooks are organized in
    this pattern.

Sequential
  • Signal Words

  • Steps
  • Stages
  • Progression

8
Sequential-example
  • The first step in redesigning your closet is take
everything out and sort through it. Anything you
havent worn in over a year should be given to
charity. Check garments for wear and tear. Take
care of anything that needs mending. The second
step is to install a closet organizer. Choose one
that will hold the different types of garments in
your wardrobe. The third step is to put items in
the closet so that those you wear most often are
easy to access. The final step is to stay
organized. Color coding is always a fun option
when organizing your closet. Good luck!
