Title: 8th Grade MCAS Review (7th Grade Material)

1
8th Grade MCAS Review(7th Grade Material)
  • Presented by Mr. Joseph Mullett

2
Purpose
  • Todays class is not to re-teach, or re-visit
material, but instead to offer us a chance to
efficiently address major points of confusion or
concern you have for the material that was
covered in 7th Grade. And maybe allow you to
find some clarity and confidence to look at a
question, not know the answer, but to work the
    question towards resolving itself.

3
Physics
  • From topics including
  • Energy
  • Motion
  • Forces
  • Waves
  • Heat

4
Big Idea-Potential E Stored Kinetic E
Motion
14 HP
Energy- KE vs. PE
  • It should be noted that it is asking for the
LEAST Potential, which in theory is actually the
    MOST Kinetic.
  • So, where is the diver moving the fastest?
  • Baseball in Arc to help.
  • Retry Question.

5
Big Idea-Energy will move from High to
Low?Equilibrium
10 MP
Energy- Movement/Changing
Hot water will cool down as KE moves from water
to surrounding air
  • Because Temperature is a measure of the average
KE of each particle, and energy looks to displace
itself until balance is reached, think about the
tubes over time. Knowing that the BATH will not
    change temp.
  • So High to Low

GET IT?
Cold water will warm up as KE moves from
surrounding air into the water and cubes to melt
them
6
Big Idea-CCR and it isnt Credence Clearwater
Revival
11 MP
Energy- Movement of Heat
  • Conduction- Movement of Heat by direct contact
(conductor touches your ticket, holds the baton)
  • Convection- Movement of Heat by Fluids (Liquids,
Gases) (Convection Ovens Blow air around inside,
    Heat in Earth)
  • Radiation- Movement of heat by Waves (Infrared,
    UV) (Blocking Bonfires)

7
Big Idea-SpeedD/T
15 LP
Movement-Speed
  • Speed is the distance traveled during a unit of
    time.
  • Think about the speed limit in this country. It
might be 30, maybe 65, but the unit is what?
  • Miles Per Hour , MPH, M/H
  • Distance (Miles) / Time (Hour)
  • /, Per, P Division

8
Big Idea-Color you see is only what is reflected
3,6 12
Energy - Review
  • Dark Colors Absorb
  • -Absorb and Convert to Heat
  • Light Colors Reflect
  • -No Absorb, No Heat

9
Big Idea-Making Sense of Graphs
3,6 12
Motion - Review
  • Constant Motion Straight Diagonal
  • No Motion Horizontal Line
  • Slow - Shallow Line
  • Fast - Steep Line

10
Big Idea-Making Sense of Graphs
3,6 12
Motion - Review
  • Constant Motion Straight Diagonal
  • No Motion Horizontal Line
  • Slow - Shallow Line
  • Fast - Steep Line

11
Biology
  • From topics including
  • Cells
  • Genetics
  • Cell Growth and Division
  • Body Systems

12
Big Idea-Function vs. Form
9 HP
Cells
  • Organelles all have specific Functions, all of
which work together to keep the cell functioning
    towards survival.
  • Having a rough working memory of what each
organelle does is necessary. At least to work
    backwards.
  • Which answers CANT be Correct?

Mitochondrion Makes usable Energy
Powerhouse of cell
Nucleus Stores Genetic Information
(DNA, Chromatin, Chromosome)
- Directs Cell Activities
Ribosomes Essential in assembling
Amino Acids into Proteins
Vacuole Stores Water, Food and
Wastes (in plant cells, extra large)
13
Big Idea-Plant and AnimalSimilarities vs.
Differences
9 HP
  • Plant and Animal Cell Pictures

Cells
  • Shape is a difference but Organelles will help
    you decide which is which
  • Plant Animal
  • Cell Wall Lysosome
  • Chloroplast Centriole
  • Large Vacuole Small Vacuoles

15
Big Idea-Getting/Making and Using Energy
8 HP
Cell Functions
6CO2 _H2O ? ? C_H12O_ _O2 6CO2 6H2O ? ?
C6H12O6 6O2 ?Photosynthesis?
?Cellular Respiration?
  • Photosynthesis (plants)
  • (Input) Water, Carbon Dioxide
  • (Output) Sugar, Oxygen
  • Cell Respiration (Animals)
  • (Input) Sugar, Oxygen
  • (Output) Water, Carbon Dioxide

16
Big Idea-All you are, is written in your DNA
2 HP
Cell Functions
  • DNA, which is stored in your Nucleus, can be in
various forms, depending upon whether or not it
is decoding, or copying, or splitting into two
new cells, DNA Controls everything that is you!
    (height, color, sex, etc)
  • DNA? Nucleosome? Chromatin? Chromosome

17
Big Idea-Strong and Weak Traits
7 LP
Genetics - Inheritance
  • Genetics can be either Dominant or Recessive.
  • This is shown as Capital (Dominant) and Lower
    Case (Recessive)
  • Dominant Traits will overpower Recessive

18
Big Idea-If I keep Cutting you in Half,
eventually Cells.
4 MP
Cell Functions
  • The Idea that all living things are made of
cells, or a collection of cells gets us started.
But We are really levels of organization.
  • Cells (Small)? Tissues?
    Organs? Organ
    Systems? Organisms (Large)

19
Big Idea-We Are FamilyI got all my sisters and
Me
13 MP
Changes over Time
  • Over time, through DNA errors (Mutations), and
Natural Selection, organisms change. Looking at
various organisms, we can still see similarities,
sometimes at Birth, sometimes at adult.
  • All RELATIVE Similarities, point to 1 THING
  • Common Ancient Ancestor

20
Big Idea-All systems GO!
13 MP
  • Respiratory Gas exchange
  • Circulatory Blood movement
  • Nervous Senses and control
  • Muscular - Movement
  • Skeletal Protect, support
  • Digestive Take in nutrition, evacuate
  • Immune Protect from attacks
  • Endocrine Hormones, chems
  • Lymphatic Toxin cleaner
  • Urinary Liquid Evacuation
  • Reproductive - DUH
  • Integumentary Skin/Hair/Nails Protect

Body Systems
  • All Systems perform a specific function like
organelles keeping the cell alive. These systems
    keep the organism alive
