Title: Meiosis

1
Meiosis
  • How are sex cells produced differently than body
    cells?

2
Where does meiosis happen?
  • Meiosis occurs in the reproductive organs
  • Produces the reproductive cells (sperm and eggs)

3
Before meiosis
  • Chromosomes duplicate

4
Meiosis I
  • Pairs of duplicated chromosomes randomly line up
along the middle of the cell
  • Duplicated chromosomes move away to opposite
    sides of cell
  • Cytoplasm divides and 2 new cells form

5
Meiosis II
  • Chromosomes line up along the center of the cell
  • Two strands of each chromosome separate and move
    to opposite ends

6
Results of meiosis
  • Four sex cells are produced
  • Each sex cell has HALF the number of chromosomes
    of the parent cell
