Forwards are there to provide width in attack and
to close out wide players in defence. Can be very
tall players, powerful at driving to the basket
and quick moving. Can also be very accurate
shooters outside and inside the key

Usually the tallest player in the team, matches
up with opposition centre, aims to dominate the
key area at both baskets for offensive and
defensive rebounds, usually good shooting from
very near the basket
Best ball handler Decides which play will be
used, good vision, takes ball up the court, tends
to be smaller player, quick mover, very good
passing ability. First player to pressure the
ball in zone defence (if on ball side), good
tactical awareness
Good ball- handler, there to assist point guard,
will have better shooting ability from outside

The Guard will tend to be the best ball handler
in the team.
The guard is responsible for bringing the ball up
the court each time and will dictate which
play the team will use.
The guard is usually the smaller player in the
team and the fastest dribbler.
The guard must have an in depth knowledge of the
team s tactics and positional responsibilities
The guard is the first player to press the ball
on defence

Forwards
Forwards are the players in the team who attack
from the wing areas of the court.
Forwards provide the width in attack and close
down the space in wide areas when defending.
Forwards are taller than guards and are expected
to drive into the key area when attacking
Forwards can switch sides of the court at any time

Centre
Centres are the tallest players in the team.
Centres are expected to win rebounds both
offensively and defensively.
Centres will spend the majority of their time
underneath the baskets
Centres will be responsible for countering the
attacks of the oppositions centre
Centres tend to be more effective closer to the
basket
