Pure Substances

• Only 1 kind of particle throughout
• Can be solid, liquid or gas
• Can be
• Refined Raw Materials
• E.g. Table sugar, aluminum foil
• Element e.g. Oxygen, Hydrogen
• Compounds
• Contain 2 or more elements combined in exact
  proportions
• E.g. Carbon dioxide CO2

• Are made up of mixtures of 2 or more pure
  substances
• Can be any combination of solid, liquid or gas
• Almost all substances in the world are mixtures
• E.g. Coke (water, sugar, CO2)
• 2 Types of Mixtures Heterogeneous and Homogeneous

Heterogeneous MixturesMechanical Mixtures

• You can see and feel the different particles that
  make up the mixture
• If you took two samples of the same mixture they
  might not have the same properties
• E.g. Chocolate chip cookie

Homogeneous MixturesSolution

• The particles mix together so well it is hard to
  notice that it is made up of different particles
• Can be mistaken for a pure substance
• Properties of the mixture will be the same in any
  sample
• E.g. Kool-Aid

• In a solution, 1 substances needs to be dissolved
  in another
• Substances that dissolve are called solutes
• Substances that solutes are dissolved into are
  called solvents
• E.g. Alkaseltzer was the solute and water was the
  solvent
• Can be solid, liquid or gas
• E.g. Steel, apple juice, air
