Title: PURITANISM

1
PURITANISM
  • THE BORING THE QUAINT

2
THE PURITANS DO AMERICA
  • PURITANS LANDED IN AMERICA AND FIRST AMASSED IN
    THE MASSACHUSSETS BAY COLONY.
  • THEY WERE THEOLOGICAL IDEALISTS WHO BELIEVED THAT
HUMANS EXISTED SOLELY TO GLORIFY GOD.
  • THE BIBLE WAS THEIR GUIDEBOOK TO EVERYDAY LIFE
(to an extreme) AND IT WAS THE SOLE EXPRESSION OF
    GODS WILL.

3
PURITAN VISION
  • THE PURITAN VISION WAS TO CREATE THE CITY ON THE
    HILL.
  • A CHRISTIAN UTOPIA AND A MODEL CIVILIZATION THAT
EXISTED AS GOD WOULD SEE FIT.
  • THE NEW WORLD WAS TO BE THE PERFECT SETTING FOR
    THIS UNDERTAKING

4
PURITANS
  • PURITAN WORK ETHIC IS NOW A FIGURE OF SPEECH
HOWEVER FOR THEM IT WAS THEIR CHRISTIAN DUTY TO
HAVE SELF DISCIPLINE, REMAIN PURE, AND WORK
    RIGOROUSLY.
  • TO BE DETERRED IN ANY WAY WAS SINFUL AND NOT
    WORTHY OF SALVATION.

5
EDWARD TAYLOR an ugly man (most likely)
  • Edward Taylor came to Massachusetts like most
Puritans, in order to be a part of the city on a
hill and live in a world modeled after Puritan
    ideals.
  • He was a graduate of Harvard and accepted a
position as physician and minister in an rural
    village called Westfield.

6
Eddie T.
  • Taylor led a life riddled with tragedy.
  • Westfield was under constant attack from natives
    and harsh weather.
  • Taylor lost his wife along with five of his eight
    children.
  • His poetry was his way to grieve, as well as his
    personal way of glorifying God.

7
Anne I love bonnets Bradstreet
  • Bradstreet arrived in Massachusetts the for the
    same reasons as Taylor.
  • She was a woman.
  • In the Paternal, Puritan society this meant a
life of servitude and quiet devotion.

8
Anne Bradstreet
  • The fact that she wrote poetry was very
    controversial at the time.
  • For a woman, it would have been seen as frivolous
    and unbecoming.
  • Women were to raise children, the extreme stay
    at home mothers.

9
Anne Bradstreet
  • She is considered to be the first American
    Poet.
  • In 1650, John Woodbridge, her brother-in law,
arranged for her work to be published in England.
  • Why do you think it was more likely to be
published in England than Puritan, Massachusetts
    Bay Colony?
