Ocean Waves
  • Waves- the periodic up down movement of water.
  • Crest- the highest point of a wave.
  • Trough- the lowest point of a wave between two
    crests.

  • Wave height- the vertical distance between the
    cresttrough of a wave.
  • Wave period- the time it takes for one complete
    wave length to pass a given point.
  • Wave speedwave length/period.

Wave energy
  • The slightest breeze creates ripples upon the
    ocean surface.
  • The more energy transferred the greater the wave.
  • However, wind barely blows in the same direction
    for long.

  • Fetch- the distance the wind can blow across open
    water.
  • White caps- crest of a wave that is blown off by
    high winds.

  • Breakers- foamy mass of water that washes onto
    the sea shore
