    algebraic expressions are equal.
  • The goal of solving a linear equation is to
    isolate the variable, to get x by itself on one
    side of the equation.
  • Distribute to remove parentheses
  • Combine like terms
  • Variables on one side, constants on the other
  • Divide both sides by the coefficient
  • Watch out for identities and contradictions
