• Large population ( 4 billion or 60 of the
  world total in 2005)
• Dynamic economic growth in many developing
  countries spurs high energy demand
• Energy security receives top priority
• Current pattern of energy sector development
  focuses on socio-economic issues and local
  environment
• Though SD is widely appreciated as a policy,
  domestic fossil fuels dominate/influence national
  strategy
• Supply side receives much higher attention than
  the demand side
• Commendable energy programmes/projects (RE, EE)
  are in place in DCs and a number of recent
  policies in many DCs set ambitious targets for
  these
• These programmes and projects are in line with
  national development priorities and have immense
  climate benefits
• These projects have huge potential to generate
  carbon credits for the international market
