Bloom's 1
  • If similar events happened today, would that be
enough for America to join a war?

4
Black Jack Pershing
  • Troops in Mexican Punitive Expedition
  • Woodrow Wilson responded to Pancho Villa's
violent attack in New Mexico, which resulted in
18 deaths by sending Pershing and 10,000 troops
    into Mexico
  • Pershing and men traveled over 350 miles into
    Mexico
  • The forces chased Villa for several months but
failed to capture the rebel leader
  • World War I
  • Guided the creation of the American Expeditionary
    Force (AEF)
  • Shaped millions of untrained men into an
effective fighting force and then led his force
    into France
  • The AEF successfully aided the Allied Powers into
victory against the Germans on the Western Front
  • Well known for great leadership and bravery

5
American Impact on the War
  • When the United States joined the Allied Powers
they brought technological advancements and the
    ability to mass produce supplies.
  • More importantly than these supplies, the United
States provided the AEF (American Expeditionary
Forces) to aid the French and British allied
    forces on the Western Front.
  • With the help of the AEF the Allied Powers were
able to successfully push back German forces and
end the war on November 11th, 1918

6
Schenck v. U.S. (1919)
  • (1919) Charles Schenck responded to the draft of
WWI by handing out 20,000 papers urging
recipients that the draft exhibited "involuntary
    servitude"
  • Proclaimed draft could be considered an act of
    slavery
  • Schenck was arrested on the idea that his acts
were in direct violation of the Espionage Act
that prohibited people from speaking and
    circulating false statements intended to
    interfere with the war effort
  • Schenck argued the Espionage Act violated the
first Amendment that granted freedom of speech
  • US argued that in the time of war the nation
could not tolerate an act that was intended to
deprive the armies of soldiers that were needed
to fight for and protect the county
  • Supreme court decided that in a time of war or
crisis the Espionage Act was constitutional in
order to ensure the nation's safety said
    Schenck's acts endangered country's safety
  • Supreme court enacted the "clear and present
danger" test regarding when it was appropriate
    to limit free speech

7
