Arab Reactions

• Modernists
• admirers of the West - rationalism, nationalism
  and modern science. They believe the West has
  been successful copy them to be successful.
• A minority in the Islamic world (roughly 15)

• Fundamentalists
• Believe Muslims have become weak and strayed too
  far from the original message of Islam. Believe
  that becoming too modern/western is the source of
  their problems.
• This group has an inflexible view of Islam. Some
  members resort to violence.
• Very small group within Islam. (was 3-5 15 years
  ago, has grown to perhaps 10)

Traditionalists

• Majority of Muslims fall in this category (75
  or more).
• not opposed to what the West does within its own
  borders, and supports science, technology as
  tools. (not to be worshipped false idols).
  Respects some aspects of West.
• concerned with impacts of Western culture
  (globalization) that threaten Islamic values.

• These are historic groups but they relate to the
  way modern Muslims see the West
