ECOLOGY
2
Revisit Ecosystem
  • 3 levels that make up an ecosystem
  • Individual
  • Population
  • Community
  • Composed of natural units of living (Biotic) and
non-living (Abiotic) things that work together.
  • Eg Marine, Aquatic, Desert, Rainforest, Tundra
    and many more

3
  • Ecosystem services are fundamental life-support
services upon which human civilization depends,
and can be either direct or indirect.
  • Direct pollination, wood, erosion prevention
  • Indirect considered climate moderation, nutrient
cycles, detoxifying natural substances and many
    more.

5
Revisit Ecosystem
  • An ecosystem is a community of living and
    non-living things that work together.

6
Trophic Relations
  • Ecosystems are natural machines that change
matter and energy in the area
  • Trophic- from the Greek word FOOD
  • Trophic relations the natural connections of
    food between living organisms
  • i.e. The food chain

8
Food Chain
  • Producers
  • Consumers
  • Decomposers

9
Species
  • Living organisms that share similar
characteristics belong to the same species.
  • The characteristics that define a species are
  • Common physical characteristics.
  • Natural, viable and fertile reproduction.
  • (able to breed among themselves, but are not able
  • to breed with members of another species).

10
Diversity of life forms
11
The six kingdoms in biology
12
Its all about adaptation!
13
Adaptation
  • An adaptation is a way an animal's body helps it
survive, or live, in its environment
  • Species must be adapted to their habitat if they
    are to survive.
  • If a species cannot adapt it risks becoming
    extinct.

14
Adaptation Evolution
  • Each adaptation has been produced by evolution.
This means that the adaptations have developed
    over many generations.

15
Physical adaptation
  • Animals depend on their physical features to help
them obtain food, keep safe, build homes,
    withstand weather, and attract mates.
  • These physical features are called physical
adaptations. They makes it possible for the
animal to live in a particular place and in a
    particular way.

16
Examples of physical adaption
  • Coat colour matched to the environment
  • Looking like leaves

17
Brainstorm some answers
  • With a partner come up with 10 examples of
physical adaptations seen in nature. State with
your example why that particular physical
features has helped the species survive. I will
give you 15 minutes to write them down then I
will randomly pick a few pairs to read out their
    answers.

18
In class assignment
  • Next class we will be looking at cells (animal
    vs. plant cells)
  • Write down 10 things you know about cells
  • (it can be anything related to cells)
  • You can work with your partner, but everyone must
submit their own copy of the assignment.
