MARY MACKILLOPS CHILDHOOD
  • She was born in Melbourne.
  • She was the eldest of seven children.
  • She had a good education and her family financial
    difficulties.
  • she had to work and gave all the money to her
    family when she was fourteen.

WORKING LIFE
  • She began as a governess.
  • Then she worked as a clerk in Melbourne
  • A carer of her uncles children
  • A teacher in Portland

MARY MET FATHER JULIAN WOODS
  • She felt a religious calling.
  • She decided to open the first St Joseph school
    for poor children.
  • And became known as sister.
  • The students had to only paid if they could
    afford it.

DIFFICULT TIMES FOR MARY
  • She had to beg for money on the street.
  • The Catholic church leaders didnt like begging.
  • And several bishops wanted to take over the
    control of sisters in the dioceses but she
    refused to change her ways.
  • She was suffering ill health for most of her life.

  • They established the first permanent house for
    orphanages, homeless shelters and refuges for ex-
    prisoners and ex-prostitutes.
  • After that she established the schools, houses
    around the Australia and New Zealand.

  • She never became bitter against the Church
    leaders that had opposed her ways.
  • She was forgiving and gave love to every one.
  • She died peacefully on August 8,1909
