determine importance. - Students will distinguish between important and
extraneous information at the word, sentence and

literary elements, or themes in text. - Students will consider how purpose(s) for reading
helps determine what is important in text. - Students will recognize the authors purpose or
perspective and its effect on what is emphasized

strategies to make generalizations, draw
conclusions, and determine what is important in a
selection.
