Classifying Sentences by Structure
  • All sentences can be classified according to the
    number and kinds of clauses they contain.

Simple Sentence
  • A simple sentence consists of a single
    independent clause. It never has a dependent
    clause or more than one independent clause.
  • They can vary in length and how many adjectives
    and phrases they have. But, they all have just
    one subject and verb. They may have compound
    parts, however.

Recognizing Simple Sentences
  1. In the late 1940s, a new style of jazz emerged.
  2. Miles Davis and other young musicians were
    influenced by and adopted this new style.
  3. Their approach to cool jazz blended strong
    rhythms with flowing melodies.

Compound Sentence
  • A compound sentence consists of two or more
    independent clauses. Each has its own subject and
    verb. They never contain dependent clauses.
  • Most of the time, the independent clauses will be
    joined by a comma and a conjunction, but they can
    be joined by a semicolon or colon.

Recognizing Compound Sentences
  1. Country music is played all over the country, but
    its roots are in the Appalachian region.
  2. Actually, the history of country music goes back
    to Europe settlers brought folk ballads with
    them to their new homeland.
  3. Appalachian musicians used different instruments
    to play the folk ballads, and they tried
    different singing styles.

Complex Sentences
  • A complex sentence consists of one independent
    clause and one or more dependent clauses.
  • In a complex sentence, the independent clause is
    often called the main clause. Each clause has
    its own subject and verb.

Recognizing Complex Sentences
  • 1. Rock-and-roll melodies are simple, which
    makes them easy to play and sing.
  • 2. When singers perform on stage, people in the
    audience sing along with them.
  • 3. The electric guitars that some musicians play
    add exciting sounds to the songs.
  • 4. Teenage girls in the audience often screamed
    while Elvis Presley performed on stage.

Identifying the Structure of Sentences
  • The Beatles consisted of four musicians in their
    twenties.
  • Because they were quite poor, they struggled at
    first.
  • They could not afford music lessons, so they
    taught themselves to play and sing.
  • They had been playing together for several years
    before they had their first hit record.

  • In India, you can see ancient architecture in
    monasteries and shrines. These structures were
    built by Buddhist monks. On the walls, you can
    see beautiful frescoes. The frescoes are
    paintings on fresh plaster. Hindu temples offer
    another kind of architecture. Hindu temples
    feature tall towers. They have curving sides and
    taper at the top. In southern India, there are
    rectangular pyramids. The steps are carved to
    tell stories.
